Helping Your Child Prepare for SEC Chemistry
Everything you need to know about the exam; and how BananaBond fits into revision at home.
What is SEC Chemistry?
SEC 06 Chemistry is Malta's O-Level chemistry exam, sat at around age 15–16. It is set and marked by the MATSEC Examinations Board and is one of the most content-heavy subjects in the SEC syllabus.
The exam is graded 1–8, with Grade 1 being the highest. It consists of two papers: Paper I (It focuses largely on experimental procedures. Students who opt to sit for the exam as private candidates must sit for this paper. Students having school based assessment marks from will only for Paper II.) Paper II (this is the main examination paper where students need to pick whether they sit for Level 1-2 or Level 2-3. Every chemistry student must sit for this paper.).
Chemistry is considered one of the more demanding SEC subjects. Students need to recall a large volume of content, from atomic structure and bonding to organic chemistry, while also applying calculation skills under timed conditions. Getting organised early makes a significant difference.
Why past paper practice matters
Past papers are the single most effective revision tool for SEC Chemistry. They show students the exact style of questions, the command words examiners use, and how marks are allocated. This information is simply not visible from a textbook alone.
Repeated exposure to past papers builds exam technique, not just content knowledge. A student who understands a topic but has never practised under exam conditions is at a disadvantage compared to one who has worked through questions systematically.
MATSEC past papers go back several years. Students who work through them by topic — rather than randomly or only in the final week — are significantly better prepared on exam day.
How to use BananaBond at home
You don't need to know chemistry to support your child's revision. Here's a simple weekly routine that takes less than 30 minutes.
Once a week, ask your child which topic feels weakest
A short conversation is enough. If they're not sure, suggest they pick the one they've spent the least time on.
Go to the Past Papers section and filter by that topic
BananaBond's past paper tool lets you filter every SEC Chemistry question by topic. No hunting through PDFs.
Work through 5 questions together (or let them do it independently)
You don't need to know the answers. Sitting alongside them while they work through questions is enough to keep them accountable.
Check answers using the worked solutions read the reasoning, not just the final answer.
Understanding why an answer is correct matters more than knowing the answer itself. Encourage your child to explain each step back to you.
If a concept keeps coming up wrong, browse the flashcard decks for that topic. Each pack of flashcard is checked by a Chemistry teacher.
BananaBond's teacher-verified decks cover every SEC Chemistry topic. A few minutes of flashcard review can quickly fill a gap in understanding.
Safe, focused screen time
BananaBond has no algorithm, no ads, and no rabbit holes. Every page on the platform has one purpose: exam preparation.
Students arrive, revise, and leave. There is nothing designed to keep them scrolling or extend their session beyond what's useful. This is a deliberate design choice. The platform is built around the exam, not to get them scrolling.
If your child is on BananaBond, they are revising. That's not something that can be said of most screens in a teenager's life.
